Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician. Born October 20, 1964, she was the 49th Vice-President of the United States. She is also the first vice president to be female and highest-ranking female official in U.S. History, as well the first African American and second Asian American vice president. As a member of the Democratic Party, she was the attorney general of California in 2011-2017 and she was a United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021. Harris was born in Oakland. Harris received her law degree from Howard University. After starting her career as an Alameda County District Attorney Harris was enlisted to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. Then she was appointed the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003, she was appointed the San Francisco district attorney. She was elected Attorney-General of California in 2010, and was reelected in 2014. Harris was the United States junior senator from California from 2017 until 2021. Harris beat Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election to become the 2nd African American woman and the first South Asian American to serve in the United States Senate. In her time as a senator, she pushed for healthcare reform, federal descheduling for cannabis, a pathway for immigrants who are not legal citizens and the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. She also backed progressive tax reform. Her sharp questioning of Trump officials in Senate hearings has earned her national attention, including the second Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, who was charged with sexual assault.
